EnterpriseSMS is The Solution

EnterpriseSMS is the solution to a wide range of requirements enterprise command, control, and communications system must satisfy.  It is a tool set that enables solutions to simple and complex operational requirements. 

We present examples of the applications of ESMS to a wide range of tasks on this and other linked pages.  These pages are a discussion of real world capabilities applied to real world problems that shows how EnterpriseSMS solves problems.  

Our solutions section also presents our strategy for measuring the quality of command and control solutions.  An over view of our approach is presented here with links to actual test cases.  Test results are published as a part of the Center and Laboratory for Integrated Systems Excellence

On this and the linked pages we show how EnterpriseSMS capabilities support Enterprise Command Station applications, Video applications, Access Control applications, Intrusion Detection applications, Communications applications, Infrastructure Management and Monitoring applications, and SCADA Monitoring and Control applications.   All of EnterpriseSMS’s capabilities are described by way of example transactions that can actually be tested.  Such example transactions are often called Use Cases or the required behaviors of EnterpriseSMS.   It is this set of example behaviors that provide the foundation for the testing conducted in the Center and Laboratory for Integrated Systems Excellence.  We  present an approach to measuring the quality of the solutions detailed on other pages.

Enterprise Command Station Behavior
This behavior below considers how a “well-integrated”command, control, and communications solution should handle events reported by integrated or interfaced subsystems. These are the most common sources of events and this behavior is conceptual foundation of a real solution.  This basic behavior provides a template for solution specific behaviors that meet your requirements.  This general use case illustrates the ESMS approach to the delivery of command and control capabilities to system operators. 

An Enterprise Command Station (ECS) receives notification of an event from a subsystem and presents it in the ECS Scoreboard.  By clicking on the event, the operator selects it as the current point of interest for current operator actions.  The ECS automatically displays event information, especially information needed for assessment of the event and it subsequent control including such items as one or more video views associated with instances of this event, it synchronizes the ECS’s graphical display with the location of the event, and takes any predefined actions associated with the selection of the event including communications connections with the location of the event. 

These behaviors must occur no matter the event,  no matter the source of the event, and no matter the sources of related information.   Thus, the complete assembly of  assessment information is the event context and is immediately presented to the ECS operator. 

  • Upon selection of an event, the ECS automatically presents a geospatial view of the area where it originated.  This graphic shows nearby system components and views (from any source).  Selection on any of these objects by clicking on it enabled operator control over that system component.  Automatically, camera views, communications channels, and commands to that system component become immediately available to the station operator. 
  • The ECS operator’s right clicking on a map displayed system component provides a menu of typical and special command options.  System administrators may design and make useful commands available to operators activated through this menu.  This includes control over doors, gates, signaling; system wide commands, and information queries about the selected system element.
  • System context will follow the mouse cursor as the operator moves it around the graphical display.  Panning across the facility allows the operator to visually track the action of the event or search an area or location for related activities by clicking on the graphical display.  Right click enables command functions relevant to the cursor location.
  • System commands include information accessing information about events such as live and stored video, configuration data, contact data, location data including street address, and a host of other possible information based on the system’s provisioning. 
  • System commands include control over the system’s components, reporting and annunciation of events to other ECS operators, and creation of new events or related events as needed.  Information may be transmitted to other users including mobile responders and related support elements and management as the situation dictates.  This is all accomplished by a few clicks without any need for system design knowledge on the part of operators and users. 

This general use case is the conceptual foundation for the design of EnterpriseSMS and the Enterprise Command Station.
